  • Physical changes that are commonly associated with the aging process can make older people feel "high" even after drinking small amounts of alcohol. So even if there is no medical reason to avoid alcohol, older men and women should consider limiting themselves to one to two drinks per day.
  • As alcohol is an irritant to the stomach, it is common for someone who drinks in excess to vomit. This puts the person in danger of choking on vomit, which could cause death by asphyxiation in a person who is not conscious because of intoxication.
  • Research indicates that a moderate dose of alcohol consumed as much as 6 hours before bedtime can increase wakefulness during the second half of sleep.
  • 21% of drivers ages 15 to 20 who died in motor vehicle crashes in 1998 had blood alcohol concentrations of at least 0.10%.
